Snapchat Harry Potter FanFic

Snapchat can be a lot of fun, & I have quite a few friends who are really, REALLY good at it.

They're great at being hilariously random, like this Snapchat from @AriFerarri:

I'm still not sure if it's Ari's portrayal of Ryan Gosling as Spiderman, or more of a What if Peter Parker had Snapchat?  Either way, LOVE.  I just hope he didn't send this to both Mary Jane AND Gwen, but I guess we'll never know until Snapchat gives us the ability to see how many people a Snapchat was sent to.  ARE YOU LISTENING, SNAPCHAT?

My friends are great at using the drawing tools to maximum effect, like this work of art from @JessicaNFrey, who turned herself into me:

That motivational Snapchat is what got me to the top of that damn mountain.

And lets be real - my friends are amazing at being sexxxy (you don't get to see those Snapchats).

In the past, I've used Snapchat to surprise my friends:

Hold Up, Bro, that's my sushi! NBD, just having a Bro Down with Survivor's Cochran.

I've heard that some people also use Snapchat to share inappropriate scenarios they've created involving LEGO minifigs of themselves & people they know.  So I've heard.

But as far as I'm concerned, Miss Haley Strong just won Snapchat with her Harry Potter FanFic.  She created this masterpiece using Snapchat's "My Story" feature.  I AM SO GLAD SHE FOUND A USE FOR THIS FEATURE.

Here is the beginning chapter of this FanFic:

I highly recommend reading the rest of this epic tale on Haley's blog.  It continues on with the story we all know & love, & then they set off on adventures.  It's really awesome, & you do *not* want to miss the Hippogriff.  Or the "About the Author" section.

You're a wizard, Haley.

The Confectionery - 20

These are the things that I think are great.

BUTTERBEER LIP BALM

Smoothicus lipsicus! At Bubble & Geek's etsy shop, you can buy this natural lip balm of vanilla & butterscotch goodness.  Along with lip balms, other items available at the shop are candles & soaps, all with a geeky flair.  For instance, a vanilla & peppermint lip balm will remind you that Winter is Coming, & a candle with the sweet scent of Pipe-weed will have you imagining you're in the Shire.  You know I love Plants vs Zombies, so I particularly squealed over the Zombie Repellent candle, which smells like sunflowers (of course).  Perfect gifts for the geeky girl in your life (hint hint).  Buy them (for me) here.

TORONTO SKYLINE

It's hard to believe a city can change so much in 14 years, but I love this CBC before/after series - compare the skyline today with how it looked in 1998.  So that's what all those cranes have been doing.  Crazy.  Check out the photos (with fun scrolling option) here.

NIGHTMARES FEAR FACTORY PHOTOS
I love these.  Nightmares Fear Factory is a haunted house attraction in Niagara Falls, & their website features photos of their visitors being scared.  They are hilarious.  Buzzfeed has just posted a collection of "bros" being scared here, & I highly recommend it.

FELIX BAUMGARTNER
So, a guy fell from space yesterday.  That's pretty cool.  After free falling 128,097', Felix Baumgartner said, “Trust me, when you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It’s not about breaking records anymore. It’s not about getting scientific data. It’s all about coming home.”  Read more here.

STAR WARS ZIP-UP HOODIES

I would wear them.  Read more here.

Those were my favourite sweets of the past week.  Come back next week for more goodies!

The Confectionery - 15

These are the things that I think are great.  So great that I want to sing about them.

HOGWARTS TREE HOUSES
J.K. Rowling has been given permission to build Hogwarts-inspired tree houses for her 2 youngest children.  40' tall, on stilts, complete with a rope bridge, secret tunnels & an owl post.  After looking at these plans, I am not ashamed to say that I am jealous of these kids.

Maybe the smaller house will be stocked with Butterbeer & treats from Honeydukes.  How I wish I could apparate.

STAR WARS ART - AMANDA VISELL
Artist Amanda Visell has created Star Wars wooden figures, complete with boxes to display them in, or next to.  They are pretty much the most adorable things ever.  I mean, Princess Leia comes with a comb & a mirror.

See Amanda's whimsical Star Wars series here, & spend all day looking at, & maybe purchasing, her beautiful art - paintings, sculptures, & figures - here.

LEGO'S 80th ANNIVERSARY
Recently LEGO released a short film to celebrate its 80th Anniversary.  The film tells the story of the Christiansen family behind the Danish company, & of the struggles & persistence that resulted in what is arguably the greatest toy ever.  (I say "arguably" to be fair, but if you actually argue with this, I don't think we can be friends.)  Of course, being a LEGO-lover, I already knew much of this incredible story, but there are details that were new to me (I knew that LEGO got its name from the Danish phrase meaning "Play Well", but I didn't know what LEGO coincidentally means in Latin: "I Put It Together").  The short film is beautiful, charming & touching.  I love that it includes a reference to the photo taken of the 3 generations of Christiansens who have run the company, Ole, Godtfred & Kjeld.  Well done as always, LEGO.

SAN FRANCISCO KINETIC TOOTHPICK SCULPTURE

Scott Weaver has been working on this toothpick sculpture of San Francisco for 35 years.  35 years. For detailed photos of each section, & a video of ping pong balls moving through the sections (explained by Scott), go here.  The man loves his city, & would be a great spokesperson for Elmer's Glue, as he says it's the only glue he has used.  35 years!

A-HA - TAKE ON ME
Yes, I'm aware it's not 1985, but I feel this must be shared.  On Saturday I was at a wedding & found out that a 21 year old acquaintance of mine did not know this song.  At all.  Not even from an 80's-themed party or anything.  She didn't even know the iconic video, & I practically acted it out on the dance floor.  Clearly, there needs to be a resurgence in the popularity of this song & video.  Share it with the young people in your life, immediately.

Be sure to check out the literal video version of Take On Me at funnyordie, & if you've never seen a literal video version, you MUST begin with Total Eclipse of The Heart.  It is the best thing the internet has come up with, IMO.  I still think "Fonzie's Been Cloned" & "Mullet With Headlights" would be amazing band names.

Those were my favourite internet sweets of the past week.  Come back next week for more goodies!

The Confectionery - 4

These are the things that I think are great.  So great that I want to sing about them.

 NATHAN FILLION ON TWITTER
There are celebrities that never interact with their followers/fans, instead tweeting about appearances or upcoming movies or albums.  This cannot be said of Nathan Fillion...in fact, I don't know if any celebrity has as much fun with twitter.  If you're not following @NathanFillion (now best known as Castle, but in my heart forever as Firefly's Captain Mal), get on it.  A day after Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom, tweeted a photo of himself & Nathan hanging out (a nerd girl dream if ever there was one), Nathan created a scavenger hunt of sorts for his London followers.  He tweeted "Ok, London. I left you a treat. Tweet a pic when you find it.", accompanied by this photo:

An hour later, a fantastic Serenity keychain (signed by Nathan) was found by a guy with Firefly characters painted on his headphones.  Does anything make me more happy?  Not right now.

Those are ridiculously amazing, & apparently made by @Bobsmade.  WELL DONE.

Later that day, Nathan hid a Dr. Horrible item, & when the first follower to reach that spot found nothing, Nathan tweeted: "Some heathen must have grabbed it. Tell you what. I’ll leave a package where only you can get it. Tomorrow good?"  The guy goes above & beyond awesome, & I'd just like to point out that he is Canadian & should probably be our King.

Celebrate his awesomeness with a scene/song from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, just because.

YELLOW SERENITY T-SHIRT

This new "want" of mine is a mashup of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine art & Serenity (captained by one Captain Mal, of course).  It is glorious - although I suggest getting it in brown, because duh.  You can buy it here.

BATH SALT PUPPIES
The face-eating zombie puppies are coming.  And you won't run away because they're too damn cute.

LEGO HAUNTED HOUSE
For the first time ever, LEGO has created a haunted house, & it is gorgeous.  Their new Monster Fighters line currently has a Ghost Train, a Vampire Castle & a Mad Scientist's Lab, but coming in September is this thing of beauty:

Yes, please.

THE A.V. CLUB'S R.E.M. PILGRIMAGE
As an enormous R.E.M. fan, it was lovely to see this video of a trip to Athens, Georgia, the birthplace of R.E.M.  Many sites that are integral to the history of R.E.M. are featured, among them:

Weaver D's, the restaurant with a familiar slogan.

The kudzu patch from the cover of their debut album, Murmur.

The trestle from the back of that album.

The video can be seen here, & it is a must for any fan of music history.

CONAN O'BRIEN + KIDS = THE BLUES
There isn't much that needs to be said about this.  It is hilarious, & I am in love with Nathaniel - & just this once, I don't mean Fillion.

Those were my favourite internet sweets of the past week.  Come back next week for more goodies!

LEGO City for Wii U

The Nintendo Wii U system is scheduled to be released just in time for the holiday season, & this morning at E3, a few of the games were announced.

Among the new titles for the new system are a new Super Mario game, & one I'm very excited about, LEGO City, being described as Grand Theft Auto meets LEGO.

I AM IN.

I love, love, love the LEGO games that are based on licensed material.  Batman, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, & Pirates of the Caribbean: I love every single one & cannot wait for the release of their Lord of The Rings game.

The LEGO games are filled with hours & hours of content, wonderful (& familiar) stories, humour, & gorgeous soundtracks. They are, quite simply, fun.  I can play them by myself or with my son...& LEGO is just awesome.

All of our LEGO games are for our PS3, but I guess I'll be buying a Nintendo Wii U.

For more on the Nintendo Wii U, check out this great article.

The Confectionery - 2

These are the things that I think are great.  So great that I want to sing about them.

THE MOTHER OF DISNEY DRAGONS

I first saw this Game of Thrones/Disney mashup on Popped Culture, a site I can't believe had gone unnoticed by me for so long.  The only thing that would make this better would be the addition of Mushu, from Mulan.  I might be the only person with lots of love for Mulan.  First of all, Lea Salonga.  Second of all, Donny Osmond as a Chinese warrior.  I mean, come on.  Anyway, Mushu is Eddie Murphy's Shrek Donkey, but in Chinese dragon form, & also, MUSHU CAME FIRST.

In the morning, I'm making crullers!

LIP DUB PROPOSAL
This is the kind of thing New Directions would have done for Mr. Schuester's proposal to Ms. Pillsbury, except they had already performed this song at the Hummel/Hudson wedding (which doesn't make any sense, because if we're at our wedding...of course I want to marry you), so instead, they sang Rihanna's We Found Love in a Hopeless Place.  I don't think Glee plans out its seasons very well.

At first, I thought it was a Honda CRV commercial.  Why else would the opening blurb so explicitly state the model of vehicle used?  It didn't matter, because I was sobbing 1 minute into it anyway.  Turns out it's all real, & everyone involved is either a friend/family member.  Very sweet, very fun, very jazz hands.  Love it.

CANDY NECKLACES - NOW WITH MORE BACON

I love bacon.  I am also a girl who wore a candy necklace to both her prom & graduation.  I found this at a site that's a great time-sucker: Archie McPhee.  They do not ship to Canada, so if any Americans would care to purchase 100 of these & send them to me, I'll be forever grateful.

HARRY POTTER/GAME OF THRONES SHIRT
This blog could easily turn into a gift-giving guide for the nerd girl in your life, & speaking of things to buy for me, this shirt is at the top of my WANT list.  As in MUST HAVE.    Buy it here.  Dark grey, medium girly fit.  Thnx.

GARFUNKEL & OATES
These girls are funny, & in this song, they play the same woman, 3 years apart: at 29, & at 31.  That's really all you need to know.

Those were my favourite internet sweets of the past week.  Come back next week for more goodies!
